Honestly, it's March in the morning. What's up with this stuff? We've had several snowfalls this year, certainly more than a normal Seattle winter, but for cryin' out loud! Tonight's snowfall is shaping up to be the most we've had all year. It's all over the roads too. What a mess. Waiter! Can I have my check? I've had enough of this! No more snow!

After over a year of craft paper in our windows, we've reluctantly moved on to something more common - indoor shutters! We had them installed in all of the bedrooms, the kitchen, and the dining nook. They are a white vinyl material that is guaranteed not to discolor, split, warp, or mildew. The installers did a nice job of balancing the shutters, caulking the edges, and adjusting the alignment. The shutters do a nice job of insulating the space (when closed) and will swing completely out of the window frame on a nice day. I still need to get my bench built in the garage!

If you have your Internet connection through Comcast, do not turn off your cable modem until after November 16th. Short reason: you won't be able to reconnect to the Internet. Long reason: It appears their primary DHCP server in Denver failed, which caused a cascade failure throughout their markets. After the Denver server is repaired, each of the child systems will have to be initialized - one at a time - on a national basis. UPDATE: 11/15 The Comcast crew is moving more quickly than was originally anticipated; most areas are now working normally.

ring, ring, telephone ring...ring, ring, telephone ring...

I recently ordered a new set of phones for our Edmonds house from Amazon. In this age of instant gratification, it's sometimes humbling to ship an item via UPS Ground. Our phones had a wonderful trip getting to us. First they sat in a warehouse for several days waiting to be put onto a truck. Then they began their journey. Through the miracle of package tracking, I knew that they had visited Oklahoma, Kansas (twice), Colorado, Utah, and Oregon before coming home to us. I told them that they should post a travelogue of their exciting vacation!

Okay - this is really nerdy. When we purchased our home, all of the cable connections ended in the garage as bare-ended wire. I decided to design the cable system to provide the strongest signal to the cable modem (for our Internet connection), the second strongest connection to the family room (for our HDTV), and leave the left-overs for the rest of the house.
The resulting signal in the Master Bedroom was not satisfactory. Some of the local channels suffered from through-the-air interference and some of the higher channels (above 60) were not clear.

Ready for a home phoneThis weekend we prepared for another first in the Edmonds house - a phone! After a year in the house we are finally ready to have a phone line attached. We've survived the past year on a cell phone that still has a Port Saint Lucie phone number. I requested the installation on Saturday; the new number should be active by Tuesday, October 24th. Today I installed "outside rated" CAT5E cable from my communications board to the outside of the house, next to the buried cable from the phone company. Hopefully we'll have a dial-tone by Tuesday.

Garage Shelf SideThe latest addition to "Man World" (the garage) is ceiling suspended shelving for Christmas boxes. These are steel-construction kits available at Lowes. The first unit took me well over an hour to assemble. The second unit took less than an hour and I did a better job. The steel angle brackets are attached to the overhead joists using two three-inch anchor bolts per leg; they aren't going anywhere!

The Florida house has closed! After nearly a year of waiting and a heart-wrenching reduction in price we finally found a buyer for our Florida home. It's going to take some time for us to adjust to a single house payment, no home owners' association dues, a single set of utility bills, and one insurance payment. Would you believe that we had to pay a monthly garbage bill for the house, even though no one was living there?

we want... a shrubbery!we want... a shrubbery!

A couple of months ago, one of our neighbors, Mike, removed nearly a dozen bushes from in front of their house. The bushes attracted bees when they were blooming and a member of their family is alergic to bee stings.
