early color photography

entry type:
Prokudin-Gorskii PhotographyI've decided to begin blogging some of the more interesting, unusual web sites that I find. I'm hoping that you might find them interesting too. The site I'm blogging today is part of the US Library of Congress. There I found an online exhibition of photographs taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii... there will not be a spelling test later.
Prokudin-Gorskii's most famous work was color photography that was performed before color emulsions had been invented. In rather clever fashion, he took three photos on black and white film while placing a colored filter in front of the camera: red, blue, and green. Each of the black and white prints could then be colored and combined to create a "color" image. The Library of Congress has taken the original negatives, scanned them into a computer, applied color to each digital negative, then combined the images. The results are pretty impressive. You can find more images on the Library of Congress web site. If you think you might enjoy reading these blog entries, please let me know!
